RSU Anatomijas muzejā tiek stāstīts, ka “visi muzeja eksponāti ir kādreiz dzīvojušu cilvēku ķermeņu daļas”. Tomēr to zināt un to ieraudzīt ar savām acīm – tās ir divas dažādas pieredzes. Manai pieredzei pievienojās vēl trešā nianse – strādāt muzejā. Darbā man ir iespēja kolekcijas eksponātiem piekļūt daudz tuvāk – rūpēties par tiem, pārvietot tos, pagriezt traukus dažādos leņķos, skatīt preparātus pie ieslēgtām un izslēgtām gaismām, varu aplūkot to kolekcijas daļu, kas nemaz neatrodas izstāžu zālē, bet, vissvarīgāk, – netraucēti vērot muzeja kolekciju vienatnē.
Sākumā pat tad, kad zināju, uz ko skatos, eksponāti šķita pārāk abstrakti. Es nekad neesmu mācījusies cilvēka anatomiju, toties ilgstoši esmu strādājusi ar tekstilu. Tāpēc burkās redzamais man vispirms asociējās ar tekstila objektiem – audumiem, auklām, mežģīnēm, diegiem… Manas smadzenes apkārt redzamo iztulkoja man saprotamā veidā. Laikam ejot, es kolekcijā sāku pamanīt arī citas detaļas – radās sajūta, ka kolekcija manu klātbūtni ir pieņēmusi un nu ir gatava atklāt savus noslēpumus. Eksponātiem, kas uz mani atstāja vispaliekošāko iespaidu, bija detaļa, ko pat neanatoms atpazītu kā cilvēka ķermeņa daļu, – dažiem slapjajiem preparātiem bija sejas vaibsti.
Kā muzeja eksponātiem to primārais mērķis šajā kolekcijā ir demonstrēt anatomiskās struktūras, bet tajos redzamie sejas fragmenti ir tikai sakritības rezultāts. Tādēļ eksponātu trauki ir pagriezti tā, lai labāk parādītu, piemēram, “Sectio frontalis oesophagi. Paries posterior“, taču tas nemaina faktu, ka preparāta trauka otrā pusē paslēpusies tā cilvēka seja, kam šī ķermeņa daļa kādreiz piederēja. Citviet divos atsevišķos traukos eksponētie preparāti ar nosaukumu “Sectio sagittalis capitis” vēlāk izrādījās piederīgi vienam un tam pašam cilvēkam, kam dzīves laikā bijušas bedrītes vaigos. Vēl kādā citā “Sectio sagittalis capitis” traukā atradās tikai divi vienas galvas griezumi, bet tas bija pietiekami, lai ieraudzītu, ka tie piederējuši korpulentam kungam ar smieklu grumbiņām ap acīm. Vēl viens sejas fragments savu uznācienu gaidīja krājuma telpā uz plaukta. Savukārt citā pagrabstāva traukā parādījās seja ar glītām vecuma krunciņām. Tajā brīdī kolekcija man bija kļuvusi daudz personīgāka un reālāka – beidzot tā bija atklājusi savu seju.
Cilvēki, kuru ķermeņa fragmenti atrodas RSU Anatomijas muzeja kolekcijā, ir anonīmi. Lielākoties nav zināms ne viņu vārds, ne profesija, ne dzīvesstāsts, pat ne tas, no kā viņi miruši, taču muzejā atrodas visdārgākais, kas viņiem jebkad ir piederējis, – viņu ķermenis. Portreti, kādi tie redzami kolekcijā, uz medicīniskās marles izšūti vēsturisko atsauču, izmantojuma simbolikas un materiāla tekstūras dēļ. Turklāt marle ir viens no materiāliem, kas parādās kolekcijas preparātu traukos, piesedzot dažādus ķermeņa fragmentus. Darbos atmesta šo eksponātu anatomiskā loma kolekcijā un pat preparātu traukos redzamā krāsu palete, atstājot tikai gaismā un ēnā iezīmētos sejas vaibstus. Par darbu nosaukumiem izmantoti šo cilvēku unikālie “vārdi”, ar kādiem tie pazīstami muzeja darbiniekiem, – eksponātu signējuma numuri. Portreti balansē starp trauslo un izturīgo, mirušo, bet joprojām dzīvojošo, brīvo, taču ierobežoto, neatpazīstamo, bet visiem it kā zināmo. The RSU Anatomy Museum states: “The exhibits are body parts of once living people”…yet, knowing that and seeing it with one’s own eyes are two very different experiences. I happen to experience the collection in a third way as well – as a museum employee. Being part of the museum staff, I have the opportunity to be in a very private interaction with the collection – looking after the specimens, moving and turning the jars, seeing the specimens with the lights on and off, accessing the parts of collection that are not even exhibited, but most of all – observing the collection alone and undisturbed.
At first, even when I knew what I was looking at, it seemed abstract to me. I have never studied human anatomy, but I have worked with textiles for a long time, so no surprise that what I saw first was various types of textile objects – fabric, ribbons, lace, threads. My brain translated the visible into something I would recognize. Over time I started to notice other details in the exhibits – it felt like the collection had decided to trust me and reveal its secrets. One type of detail in particular came to my attention, a detail that even a non-anatomist would identify as human – some wet specimens had faces.
As specimens, their primary purpose in this collection is an anatomical one, so the face as the part of the body is often not important – the jars are turned to exhibit the “Sectio frontalis oesophagi. Paries posterior“, but on its other side is hiding the person’s face to whom it once belonged. The specimens in two separate jars showing “Sectio sagittalis capitis” turned out to be one person that used to have dimples in the cheeks, another “Sectio sagittalis capitis” has only two slices of a face, but one can see he was a rather rotund man with laugh lines around his eyes. I found another quarter of a face resting in peace on a shelf in a storage room, and one more exhibit on the basement floor revealed the beautiful wrinkles of an elderly person. The collection became a lot more real and personal to me – I put a face to it. 
The residents of the museum’s collection are anonymous – with few exceptions their names, professions, life stories and even the cause of death are not known, but what the museum does have are the fragments of the most precious thing they once possessed – the body they lived in. Medical gauze is used as a base material to embroider on, not only because of its historical context, material purpose and textural qualities, but also because it is the one material that appears in the collection securing some body details. These portraits dismiss the anatomical reference and purpose in the collection, even the colour scheme associated with them as anatomical exhibits, is avoided, leaving only the facial features marked by the light and shadow. The titles of the work are their unique “name” in the collection – the registration number. These embroidered portraits linger between fragile and tough, hard but soft, living but dead, freed but enclosed, part but complete, piece but peaceful.
