The figures – stumpwork couples I embroidered were finished off as earrings with tassels. That happened even before I knew what “stumpwork” was 🙂 The scale of these miniature couple portraits are 3 x 5 cm and each of them represent a period in fashion – Belle Epoque, 18th century or mid 19th century etc. Although the couples in these pictures have already found their owners, you can put in an order with me by writing me an e-mail briebera@gmail.com and I will make a custom made couple-earrings for you ears as well.
“Stumpwork, a term coined in the 19th century, also known as raised or embosted work in the 17th century, reached it’s height and popularity between 1650 and 1690. With the influence of the “broderie en relief”, a highly padded and naturalistic form of ecclesiastical embroidery and a technique that can be traced back to the 15th century, raised work gradually became popular for a domestic and decorative embroidery. Stumpwork objects displayed a high level of imagination in design and were predominantly adorned with pictorial images drawn from biblical stories and classical mythology. Other popular images were large format portraits, often framed in oval cartouches.” (RSN Book of Embroidery)
